Beware of being only a writer.

It was an odd experience, this bringing to life of pages born of my pen and forgotten. Writing and other efforts to produce an enduring piece of artwork is a gallant response to the prospect of death. When I started to learn how to read, I discovered the same kind of power. I could create an environment that I didn't have, and I could order this environment in the way that I couldn't in my actual life. Then, when I learned to write, I learned that I could do this not only for myself, but for other people. I could create whole things that were believable, at least to myself, at that point. Language is a door. Words en-trance and are an entrance; they draw you in. When you read, the book you cradle disappears and the tales within unfold in your mind. Writing is a shelter of words and reading an interior adventure.

It's hard for me to believe that people who read very little (or not at all in some cases) should presume to write and expect people to like what they have written.

My early attempts writing plays, which are very poetic, did not use the language that I work in now. I didn't recognize the poetry in everyday language of black America. I thought I had to change it to create art.
