The story of John Ritter illustrates what it means to be a hero and how we treat our heroes. When we idealize real people they lose their humanity. They are turned into idols that we worship and may later want to destroy. Heroes are transformed from conscious-feeling fellow homo sapiens into characters in our stories. The greatest hero-characters will become legends or even mythic characters. We might think we know them, but when they are idolized they become more like treasured memories, existing in our minds as archetypal characters, rather than living-breathing human beings with thoughts and feelings of their own.
Jeff Rasley
We can't let the next generation grow up without heroes. Some of us have to fight on!
Avijeet Das
One’s options in this world are as vast as the horizon, which is technically a circle and thus infinitely broad. Yet we must choose each step we take with utmost caution, for the footprints we leave behind are as important as the path we will follow. They’re part of the same journey — our story.
Lori R. Lopez
Heroic dreams are the consolation of the unhappy. After all, when people like us say we're being heroic, it usually means we're about to kill each other--or kill ourselves.
Orhan Pamuk
If you honor the moments by not wasting them, the Time will honor you back by remembering you as the hero, for the rest of the time to come.
Amit Kalantri
Unconsciously we all have a standard by which we measure other men, and if we examine closely we find that this standard is a very simple one, and is this: we admire them, we envy them, for great qualities we ourselves lack. Hero worship consists in just that. Our heroes are men who do things which we recognize, with regret, and sometimes with a secret shame, that we cannot do. We find not much in ourselves to admire, we are always privately wanting to be like somebody else. If everybody was satisfied with himself, there would be no heroes.
Mark Twain
Teaching remains a heroic act to me, and teachers live a necessary and all-important life. We are killing their spirit with unnecessary pressure and expectation that seem forced and destructive to me. Long ago I was one of them. I still regret I was forced to leave them. My entire body of work is because of men and women like them.
Pat Conroy
Why do we love heroes? Because life is a fight.
Bangambiki Habyarimana
Don't let hollow heroes distract you from saving yourself.
Nikki Rowe
You can survive without artistry, but you cannot live without artistry.
Amit Kalantri
I just wonder… Isn’t it better to start as a monster and become a hero? Isn’t that what creates belief? The idea that someone can change?
F.D. Lee
Tenacity runs thick in the veins of a villain.
Cheyanne Young
I like to read stories where heroes are actually heroes.
Richard Rigoli
Being a hero means ignoring how silly you feel.
Diana Wynne Jones
Besides, two kinds of people have the courage to make someone else's decisions: the hero, who comes to your rescue when you can't even cry out for help, and the tyrant. The only difference between them is the hero listens. As soon as you can talk, he'll put you down if you say so.
Skyler White
Maybe the wild ones weren't hyperactive; maybe they were misplaced heroes. After all, in another era, the same behavior that is now throttled with Ritalin and disciplinary rap sheets would have been the mark of greatness, the early blooming of a true champion. Riordan played with the idea, imagining the what-ifs. What if strong, assertive children were redirected rather than discouraged? What if there were a place for them, an outdoor training camp that felt like a playground, where they could cut loose with all those natural instincts to run, wrestle, climb, swim, and explore?
Christopher McDougall
Tragic heroes are failed pragmatists. Their ends are unrealistic and their means are impractical.
Adam Phillips
Not every girl can be Isabelle Lightwood or Katniss Everdeen. I think the true measure of a hero is what a person does with what they have, how hard they are willing to fight, and how far they are willing to go to set things right.
Sarah Cross
Hazel squinted. "How far?""Just over the river and through the woods."Percy raised an eyebrow. "Seriously? To Grandmother's house we go?"Frank cleared his throat. "Yeah, anyway.
Rick Riordan
It drives me crazy who quickly the great ones get canonized. 'Blah-blah-blah is such a terrible loss.' Does that mean that the death of one mediocre slob is not as terrible? Do fags have to be geniuses to justify living?
Sarah Schulman
I decided to do the easy task of changing situations and conditions by being a hero, than staying back to do the difficult task of changing people by being just a man.
Amit Kalantri
After September 11th, I never much liked the trend of everyone and his brother wearing the hats and jackets of the NYPD and FDNY. Only the people who do the job should get to wear the hat. Would you wear someone else's Medal of Honor? Yes, it's a tribute, and sincere tribute is always appropriate for these brave people. But wearing their symbols is also rubbing off a piece of heroism that isn't yours.
Bill Maher
What does seem to me poisonous, what breeds a type of patriotism that is pernicious if it lasts but not likely to last long in an educated adult, is the perfectly serious indoctrination of the young in knowably false or biased history - the heroic legend drably disguised as text-book fact. With this creeps in the tacit assumption that other nations have not equally their heroes; perhaps even the belief - surely it is very bad biology - that we can literally 'inherit' tradition.
C.S. Lewis
Do you know what I remember? When [my father] read to me. Stupid things, dragons and heroes. He wouldn’t turn a page until I reached over and took his hand. That big man made every step of the story my choice. I loved that. He died of the wasting, in a Denerim ward. Those last weeks I read to him. I had to take his hand to turn the pages. And I couldn’t tell if he was too weak, or if it was the old game…No one tells you how to mourn. And when someone says, “move on”, you take their hand and say “my choice.
Aveline Valen
What is heroic is not making life any harder that it has to be.
Marty Rubin
Remember, before they promoted to the chair of CEO, they were the best employees of their companies.
Amit Kalantri
Great heroes need great sorrows and burdens, or half their greatness goes unnoticed. It is all part of the fairy tale.
Peter S Beagle
Your position may be highly powerful, but you will be a hero only when you are highly respected.
Amit Kalantri
Is it not enough to dip your tongue into my soul and write poetry?
Evelyn Lielou Colon
When the heroes go off the stage the clowns come on.
Heinrich Heine
If you achieve a success not achieved by anyone else and not possible to achieve by anyone else then you are the hero of your generation.
Amit Kalantri
Stories of absurd events in life get my creative juices flowing and have so far given birth to some of my best ideas.
Simon Zingerman
The most unlucky generation is the one which couldn't produce a hero to look upto.
Amit Kalantri
We are never the heroes of our own stories, unless we are lying. If we choose to count ourselves among the brave, we write ourselves as the villains we are, hoping for redemption.
Suzanne Rindell
There are those who hold first rankers and there are those who are heroes.
Amit Kalantri
Let's get one thing clear, there may be few or many successful people in your profession, but there is going to be only one hero in that profession.
Amit Kalantri
Tim and Raine are coming in.""Are they insane?""Apparently.
Susan Bischoff
Just think of a safe location.""Are there tennis balls in the soup?""Come on, be serious.""A pear camping highway fire mask," he said, more intensely. My heart rate, which had finally started slowing, sped up again.
Susan Bischoff
Anyone who does anything to help a child in his life is a hero to me.
Fred Rogers
Heroes don’t have the need to be known as heroes, they just do what heroes do because it is right and it must be done.
Richelle E. Goodrich
As an observer of human nature, let's just face the facts: stupid stuff sells, and often the more stupid and silly it is, the better it sells.
Simon Zingerman
I am of certain convinced that the greatest heroes are those who do their duty in the daily grind of domestic affairs whilst the world whirls as a maddening dreidel.
Florence Nightingale
To me, empathy and compassion are among the bravest of emotions ... and faith, the bravest of convictions.
Gerard de Marigny
I never encountered any crisis in life, because I solved my problems before they turned into crisis.
Amit Kalantri
The world is not fair. That's why it needs heroes. Play fair. Be a hero.
Mark Andrew Poe
Whether I shall turn out to be the hero of my own life, or whether that station will be held by anybody else, these pages must show. To begin my life with the beginning of my life, I record that I was born (as I have been informed and believe) on a Friday, at twelve o’clock at night. It was remarked that the clock began to strike, and I began to cry, simultaneously.
Charles Dickens
A hero is not only a brave individual, but a brave individual that dares to be different.
Keely Barton
Heroes endure because we need them. Not for their own sakes.
Cassandra Clare
Yes. Loving somebody isn't a one time thing, its an everyday thing. Something you do to them, with them, for them. Because of them. Every day, all day. And night." ~Solomon~
Lucian Bane
Well, the ancients might not have been very heroic. Most of them were probably like Mother, crouched somewhere trying to work out how to make fake jawbone jewelry that would look like the real thing.
Barbara Kingsolver
Using your talent, hobby or profession in a way that makes you contribute with something good to this world is truly the way to go.
Simon Zingerman
As a general man I tried watching movies, playing sports, going to picnics and other entertainments but I still got bored, then I tried heroism and now I am hero, and I never get bored.
Amit Kalantri
Heroes are made by the paths they choose, not the powers they are graced with.
Brodi Ashton
The young man looked down from the cart at the people in front of him. Jonah felt his teacher’s eyes meet his own, and for a fraction of a second a smile played on the prisoner’s lips. Then he glanced toward heaven and spoke. “I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country.
Anna Myers
Never allow anyone to take advantage of you in no shape form or fashion. People get into relationships for different reasons. And, many are often looking for something in return and it mostly relates to security. Don't unite with any person who only wants to use your possessions and wealth to elevate themselves to the next level. You ought to value yourself much more than that. Each person in a relationship should be able to contribute wholly and completely.
Amaka Imani Nkosazana
Quite, quite,' she thought with a little sigh. 'It's always like this in their adventures. To save and be saved. I wish somebody would write a story sometime about the people who warm up the heroes afterward.
Tove Jansson
Of all the stories I have read about heroes, and all that I could ever read, of one thing I'm certain-he is mine.
Camron Wright
I've never met a soldier who knew he was a hero. It's not false modesty. They simply decide to do something that they know they must do, usually for there comrades, because if they don't, those people will suffer in some way. For them, that compulsion is far stronger than any fear. The fact we find it exceptional is a sad indictment of the human race. I'd like to live in a world of heroes. If we did, there would be no wars.
Karen Traviss
There really is power in numbers. In today’s society one has to understand the true power of word of mouth. It’s true that the new tastemakers are us.
Simon Zingerman
Little girls grow up thinking that knights in shining armor actually exist.  But they don't.  And if those valiant heroes ever did bless this world with their chivalrous deeds, I imagine, just like Christ's apostles, they were destroyed by envy on the battlefront.
Richelle E. Goodrich
